Bio

Slap of Reality, a seminal melodic punk/hardcore band from Tampa, Florida, formed in 1987, has left an indelible mark on the underground punk scene. Blending the raw urgency of East Coast hardcore with emotionally charged melodies and introspective lyrics, their sound bridges the intensity of hardcore punk with the catchiness of alternative rock, paving the way for what would later be called “emo-core.” Drawing inspiration from bands like Dag Nasty, Hüsker Dü, Samiam, Seaweed, and 7 Seconds, Slap of Reality stood out for their heartfelt songwriting and passionate live performances, becoming a defining voice in the late ’80s and early ’90s punk landscape.
During their initial run, the band released a demo, three 7” records, and two full-length albums, including their debut Three Lefts Make a Right, recorded at Tampa’s legendary Morrisound Recording studio. They shared stages with iconic acts like Fugazi, Jawbox, 7 Seconds and Samiam, earning critical respect and a cult following in the punk community. In 1996, they nearly signed with a major label before a temporary disbandment.
Reuniting in 2010, Slap of Reality continued to evolve their signature sound, retaining their sincerity while embracing musical growth. In 2019, they signed with Florida’s A Jam Records, releasing the Gaslight 7” EP, featuring guest vocals from Chris Wollard of Hot Water Music. Their 2023 full-length Goodbye, Me, released via Res Ipsa Records, marked their first LP since 1996. With tracks like “Cover IT Up” showcasing a darker yet distinctly Slap of Reality vibe. Other featured guests on the record include Mark Vecchiarelli and Kevin Lynch from Shades Apart on “Passing Time”, and Alf Bartone from Ex Number Five on “Cover It Up” and “The Point Of Not Knowing”. Known for their enduring presence in Tampa Bay’s punk scene, the band continues to deliver high-energy shows. Slap of Reality’s legacy endures, influencing a new generation of melodic punk and hardcore bands with their honesty, melody, and heart that never go out of style.
